Derrynane National Park

Derrynane National Park is located Southwest of Caherdaniel, approximately 45 minutes drive from Caherciveen. Nature trails with lead the visitor through the dunes which are bordered by a long sandy beach. Within the grounds stands a fine mansion where Daniel O'Connell lived.

It was the attraction of this location that lead to a group of two enthusiastic teachers and twenty-two not-so-enthusiastic students spending an afternoon hiking the park in search of that summertime oasis-the beach! Luckily for us, the sun gods were on our side and the majority of the walk was downhill, so it didn´t take long before the smiles had returned to the students’ faces.

After dodging the occasional car and excited puppy we reached Mass Path. A Mass Path was historically used in Ireland when the practice of Catholicism was outlawed. This part of the walk was the most difficult (and dirty!) to reach the beach. With the hard work complete, students and staff were free to relax, swim and take photographs on Derrynane Beach, before heading back to Caherciveen.

Welcome to the Wild...

This year, the Asana Language School of English has introduced a new afternoon activity for it´s students. The ‘Into the Wild’ survival course teaches students how to survive without matches, food or a place to sleep. Today was the first experience of the new course and the students loved it. The course began with ‘keeping ourselves warm.’ With no matches or lighters to make a fire, students were forced to use two sticks….truly amazing!

Despite the enthusiastic beginning of the course, both students and staff ended up having to suffer the indignities of eating nettles. Yes! Real, stinging nettles!

This survival course was really something else. Despite our best efforts to describe this course, an experience like this can only be truly understood if you complete yourself.
